8 September 2008 - Lion Nathan secures 5 year Japanese syndicated loan

Lion Nathan today announced that it has entered into a syndicated loan facility arranged by Mizuho Corporate Bank. This facility allows Lion Nathan to access JPY 30 billion, which equates to approximately AUD 340 million. The term of the debt will be for five years from drawdown and, when swapped into Australian dollars, is priced at bank bill swap rate (BBSW) plus 75 basis points excluding arrangement fees.

Lion Nathan Limited (Lion Nathan) has posted a strong interim result, lifting operating net profit after tax (NPAT) by 7.0% to $167.7 million for the six months to 31 March 2008. Net sales revenue again grew strongly, rising 7.9% to $1.12 billion as increased investment in marketing and innovation initiatives continued to encourage drinkers to shift to higher equity national and premium brands. The robust revenue improvement was also assisted by the earlier timing of Easter in 2008 and the inclusion of almost three months of Boag’s trading following its acquisition in January 2008.

The quarter was characterised by strong revenue growth driven by continuing mix shift to premium beers and higher equity brands as well as brand innovation generated over the past three years. This value growth helped offset cost pressures arising over the last two years due to the Australian drought, the global commodities boom and rising oil prices which have caused significant cost inflation for the industry and our customers.
